The shading on this piece really makes it come alive. I can almost see your sheriff putting down his newspaper-scroll hybrid, and then sauntering off to go bust some criminals hiding deep inside a local opium den. Well done indeed.
Another thing-- historically, there were many Chinese in the Old West, working as miners, launderers, or prostitutes-- anything the (relatively) more privileged white class didn't want to do, the immigrating Asians snapped up. The miners became particularly successful, furthering racial tensions between the two cultures as the Anglos coveted the money the Chinese had worked so hard to procure. Undaunted, Asian culture marched East across the Wild West. Even Deadwood, the fabled party town of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane had its own Chinatown, teahouses and all.
*cough* Sorry for the rant. Didn't mean to burden you with all of that. Anyway this is an instant favorite, and if you could tell me anymore about the project it went to, I'd be quite happy.
What makes this all the more meaningful is that there actually WERE a lot of Chinese in the Old West, working as miners, launders, and other menial jobs that more privileged white folk. There was even a Chinatown as far east as Deadwood, the fabled party town in the Dakota Territory.
Anyway, this is absolutely lovely. An instant favorite.
Chinese Wuxia fits incredibly well with the American Western, doesn't it?
